Character Name: Sam Winchester
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Point: Season 15, Episode 20 "Carry On" as his brother burns on the pyre
Age: 37
Background: Here!

Arrival Scenario: Cadens, Free Cities

Suitability:

Sam Winchester is one of those wonderful Swiss army knife characters that can really thrive almost anywhere. He is adaptable, and has adjusted to circumstances more times than he can count, whether this stems from loss or just a change in the game. He has very translateable skills.

He can earn coin from fighting monsters (which will blow his mind). He'll be able to aid others and to fight off a bandit or two if one's around. He will dig into the art and history and the every day culture and politics. He'll immerse himself and become as much of an expert if he can. He is known for doing very deep dives into books, lore, and websites. He also has bar skills, so he will be able to pick up something simple like that. He'd also probably take classes... (he'd probably try to test into the knowledge university and be laughed into lower classes, if only because not every skill is translatable) but, he will grumble at his 37 years of age he carries.

He will 100% immerse himself in this world and become an active participant.

All of this is doubled because his brother is alive and well here, and happy, and kind of actualized. So, that will motivate him further.

Because Rowena is here, he will pick back up on their magic tutelage but with the Abraxas bent to it.

To be quite honest, he has many avenues he'll be able to take and once he accepts their new circumstances (which he will, day two), then he'll get to work.

Powers:

🔪 Sam was one of several children born and promised into a demon army Azazel wanted for his own personal machinations. It has been years, but Sam had pronounced precognition both in dreams and sometimes if he had a strong enough pull, and, were he drinking demon blood, he's able to strongly blast away demons, or to simply exorcise them on his own. It has been years, but he would, theoretically be able to do this. He is also immune to some demon's bright smiting light

🔪 Sam studied witchcraft under Rowena, unofficially becoming her apprentice. In his world, the kind of witch he would be would be classified as a student. (It should be noted that, by Supernatural canon standards, any person with the right ingredients and the right incantation can perform witchcraft.) He also has an almost photographic memory when it comes to people, places, spells, symbols, and languages.

the next section is more about his abilities and skills, but I think this falls under relevant "powers"

🔪 Sam Winchester is a self taught hacker, able to hack into police databases, traffic cameras and building security. (This of course is the least relevant of his skills and power.)

🔪 He's also proficient in combat, physically fit, and good with most weapons. He knows how to take them apart, perform proper maintenance and clean them out. He is a good shot and merciless with a knife, but he's also able to improvise in any setting. He has a high pain tolerance.

🔪 Sam has extensive, far reaching knowledge of lore and supernaturals, at least from his world and was an avid reader.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

While someone who doesn't know Sam, or knows his story only, might point to the death of his mother and all of the events that set into motion, or even his expulsion from his family due to his decision to pursue higher education, Sam himself would see the death of his first love Jessica, as the most important event in his life.

In college, Sam was in a serious relationship with Jessica Moore, a fellow student. She knew nothing about his life before Stanford besides his estrangement from his family. He'd left hunting behind and he was looking at law schools. His father goes missing and his brother Dean tracks him down because he went on a "hunting trip." Reluctantly, he teams back up with his brother on a routine case, doesn't find their father, returns to his room and witnesses his fiance go up in flames on the ceiling.

This parallels from the Pilot with their father giving baby Sam to Dean to run out of their burning house, as Dean runs into Sam's burning house and saves him.

Instantly, with a drop of the trunk, he is back in the life. This completely twists his trajectory back to what he will learn is an inevitability. It impacts him deeply over the next year, as he is driven by bitterness and to an extent, revenge. Having been too young to feel the immediate emotional impact of his mother's death (save for his upbringing), he finally has a parallel to work with. It hardens him at first, and shows him that maybe his father wasn't as much of a bastard as he thought he was.

This one event blows his world wide open, introduces him to the demon conspiracy he was literally born into, and eventually, the Bible-story he and Dean are both expected to act out. It plants a seed that grows over the next fifteen years. Hunting is in your blood. Being a hunter is something you are. And though Sam wanted more and always felt othered, Jessica's death is the first step (of many) to Sam really owning who he is.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

Sam's moral code has waxed and waned as the years have gone by. He still has his basic morals. Innocent people should not be killed. He has graduated to include other species to the definition of people, because he knows that while everyone has the capacity to do evil things, everyone is capable of goodness. Just like everyone is capable of doing anything if their back is against the wall.

While Sam wouldn't jump right to kidnapping and torture, (his trigger finger isn't as itchy as his brother's) if the ends justify the means, and real lives are at stake, he may not blink. He's very much a guy now that does what has to be done. The life of a hunter is a brutal one and he, too, believes it ends bloody. If it's kill or be killed, he will.

While he can be sympathetic and frequently understand all sides to a conflict, that doesn't mean he won't do what has to be done.

If you could put a label to Sam's morals, they would be a sliding scale of gray. But, he still hunts. Still kills what hunts people. He just has a better grasp on what kind of people and things are out there. He will ask questions.

And then if he has to, he won't hesitate to shoot later.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

Sam admires capable people who choose to open their eyes over ignorance. He has always found connections with people who see themselves as outsiders, but haven't lost any strength because of it. He definitely gravitates to loyal and compassionate people. As an aside, he also tends to connect with only children.

He definitely favors intelligence and a scrappy go-getter attitude, but where he values smarts, he values both kinds: intelligence and street smarts. Even when he wasn't as self assured, he definitely admired self assuredness. He admires people who can take care of themselves, and people who admit they need help. He also admires people who choose their own path. It doesn't change where he's been or where he's going, he's on his own, but he admires that they deviated from the expected. He also admires families that have made it through hard times. Families that choose to stick together. Get through it together. Finally, he admires open-minded people much more than close-minded people, especially the older he gets.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

Sam Winchester has come a long way, that I can safely say there isn't one part of himself that Sam "dislikes." I think there are traits he has that he likes less than others, but he's come to the conclusion that he is who he is. I think he'd tap more into the qualities he likes about himself, because they come easiest to him. He's gotten to a point in his life where he wouldn't dwell on his negative qualities, because they are as much a part of him as his positive ones. He is who he is.

That said, throughout his life there were parts of himself he didn't like, trust, and sometimes hated, but it's been a very long time and he has since evolved.

As a young kid, he never felt like he belonged. When he slowly learned what he was but didn't have real answers, he saw himself as a freak, and that compounded his sense of 'otherness.' Like his brother he can be self-loathing, but the darkest parts of himself he either completely ignored or indulged in too hard. For a time, he did drink demon blood because he thought it would help them end Lilith once and for all, but it also made him feel less and less human. He has a ruthlessness that can come from when his family is threatened or hurt, and he has a codependence he has grown with, but can also come out in dark ways.

He has gone through suicidal periods, when Dean was in Hell, and after coming back from Hell soulless. He has had points in his life where he wonders if everyone would be better without him.

All that said, Sam is several years divorced from his personal demons taking center stage and has embraced his found family. Because he has focused on Dean and Cas and Jack and for those years with Mary, he's really come into his own. Likewise, learning what foothold Chuck really had in their lives, he's not as quick to dwell on his darkest impulses.

If there's something that he might change about himself, it's when he utterly cannot function without Dean on Earth. While canon shows he moves on eventually, and has a family, his first instinct is to burn his brother's body alone, away from their found family. He will likely get shit for this.

I think if he dislikes anything in hindsight, it's his tendency to isolate. But, he has come far enough that he will crawl out of that hole.

What is their sign, and why?

Sam is The Hierophant.

From a very, very young age, he was raised under a strict moral code: John Winchester's way or the highway. Over time, he put together his own personal code he lives by.

Yes, he is a hunter, and hunting involves killing, but it's something deeper than that. Hunting is saving people. Hunting is family. Hunting is a network of loyalty and found family. He will be there for those who need him, even if it comes to personal strife to him. He will keep an open mind and remember that the world isn't black and white. Even in the face of complete and utter loss, he never gives up. The foundation of his code has never changed, it's the fine print that's made him a better person and a better hunter.

Like his brother, he is not his father. His is Sam Winchester. And he has fashioned his own code together that works for him, one he knows his brother shares.

While this code is malleable, and often unspokenly rewritten, it will always be there in some form. It keeps him going.
